Experience Dinosaurs Unearthed at the Saskatchewan Science Centre

The KinderBuzz Kidz Team had the chance to attend the official launch of the Saskatchewan Science Centre’s latest exhibit, Dinosaurs Unearthed, and they are still buzzing about it!  I’m not a kid (hold your laughter please) and I am still buzzing about seeing the amazing animatronic giants. The exhibit is a beautiful combination of technology, artistic work, lighting, and sound that makes you feel as if you are in the blockbuster movie Jurassic Park.  It is the exhibit of the summer for little kids (and big kids too) in Regina and you have to experience it more than once to take it all in.

When we first arrived at the Science Centre, there were a number of prehistoric giants in the front of the building behind a protective fence.  The kids were blown away with how realistic the dinosaurs looked.  What was great to see were the children’s reactions as the dinosaurs unexpectedly moved and roared.  The kids were so excited to see something so realistic that most of us have only read about or seen in books or maybe movies.  Their reactions are priceless:  some kids squealed with delight, some kids ran in horror and then laughed, while others simply stood in awe.  I loved watching all of their reactions.

There are many interactive activities to experience.  It seems kids naturally gravitated immediately to each of the tablets that were in front of some of the dinosaurs.  The tablets allow kids to interact with the prehistoric giants by simply pointing the tablet camera in the direction of the dinosaurs.  You can make them move, see what they eat, and learn many other Dino facts.  There are also separate stations where kids can make the giants move and roar.  Inside the dimly lit exhibit, you feel like you are transported to a prehistoric cave.  The lighting sets the mood for the entire place.  And the roars you hear make you feel like something big is waiting.  There is a Dino-dig table where kids can use their hands and experience the tactile sensation of digging in what appears like sand but feels more like rubberized cork to hunt for fossils like a true paleontologist.  There is plenty of room to dig and move around and you actually can find some interesting fossils to identify.  There is also a collection of real fossils on display and full skeletons for kids to view and lots of interesting Dino facts to learn about while you browse around.  SPOILER ALERT (but a helpful warning): At the end of the exhibit, some younger kids may get a little scared of the T-Rex who appears suddenly because he is well-hidden in the trees.  He also roars loudly, but don’t worry, nothing to fear.  For me, that was the test that it was a great exhibit as it was so life-like!

I asked the KB Kidz Team which dinosaur was their favorite, they couldn’t pick just one!  They were all talking at once a million miles a minute…and they gave it 9 thumbs up, which translates to AWESOME.

Dinosaurs Earthed will be running until September 28, 2014 at the Saskatchewan Science Centre.  Make sure you experience it more than once!
