Food for Families is a fundraiser created by teacher Mme Ling to benefit the Regina Food Bank.
Last year, during a conversation with a close friend, Mme Ling mentioned that she couldn’t wait for payday, and when she heard his response, “At least you probably still have milk in your fridge!” she knew that she needed to do something to help. As a young mom raising her two children on her own many years ago, her friend’s comment brought back a flood of memories of when she struggled to feed her two little ones. Mme Ling strongly believes that no family should have to struggle to buy the bare necessities, and was eager to start a wonderful project such as ‘Food for Families’.
She and her class of twenty-seven Grade 5 students invited local celebrities to come spend an afternoon to paint plates with them after studying the theme 'Making a Difference' in English Language Arts. In turn, they wanted to make a difference in their own community, and worked hard to make this event successful.
Each student was paired up with a personality, and worked side by side as they painted their plates. Inspiration, humour, and a lot of awe took place in the gym that afternoon. Each personality, student, and parent volunteer received specially made aprons for this event. Heather Laird with Ceramics Plus Regina was on hand to provide any help needed. Heather also fired the plates so that the end result was a food safe masterpiece.
Now these 50 plus plates are up for auction, and the proceeds are going to the Regina Food Bank.
The list of guests who took part in the event were Sabeen Ahmad (CTV Morning Live), Rory Allen (Entertainer), Kennedy Bonk (Digital Artist), Alex Brown (CTV News), Cassity (Z99 Radio), Phil Darlington (CTV News), Rustie Dean (my92.1 Radio), Joe Fafard (Artist/Sculptor), Teri Fikowski (Global News), Jessica Frost (my92.1 Radio), Christeen Jesse (CTV News), Tiffany Lizee (Global News), Gene Makowsky (Sask.
